CHARACTER
Character Name: Bruce Banner
Character Age: 40s
Canon: MCU
Canon Point: After Thor Ragnarok
History: http://marvelcinematicuniverse.wikia.com/wiki/Hulk
Personality: Bruce Banner’s life before the accident is left sort of a mystery in the films. We know he had a loving relationship with lab partner Betty Ross, and a successful position and military contract with his research carried out in the labs at Culver. We can speculate that he may have had some unresolved anger issues. He's a man who doesn’t like himself when he’s angry. The Hulk is on Bruce’s mind every moment of every day. Bruce lives knowing that he must stay calm, that his heart rate has to stay steady, and that he must tailor every situation to avoid a rage response. Otherwise, people will die. Part of the way he accomplishes this is by gently disconnecting from the world around him. To people who meet him he scans as cool, calm, and sometimes a little distant. The fact that he’s also a scientist makes other characters compare him to Stephen Hawking. On a day to day basis, nothing appears to ruffle his feathers. He takes outright goading and laughs it off, tries not to engage in fights when he can, and generally comes across as politely reserved.

This applies in terms of personal connections, too. He also lives life as a fugitive which is prohibitive in terms of making friends and putting down roots. The US Army consider his body their intellectual property, they would do anything to get their hands on him to further their designs of producing a super soldier. So, Bruce runs, and doesn’t settle, and runs. He tries not to make connections when he settles down because the more people learn about him, the more risk there is that the truth will be discovered. He lives with the reality that no matter how kind someone is to him, he will eventually have to move on. More than that, over the past few years he has gotten used to the fact that his presence is immediately dangerous to the people around him, and that his emotional investment makes that even more true. He has many very good reasons to keep isolated.

This was particularly driven home when his visiting Culver resulted in Betty Ross being put in danger and injured by Hulk related shenanigans. He’d originally tried, despite being back in the same city has her and still deeply in love with her, not to let her know he was back. His protectiveness of her outweighed his desire to be near her, and he was quite correct in thinking that her being the object of his love and close to him would be likely to provoke the Hulk into emerging.

There is also the reality of the people he has killed. The Hulk has a body count, including scientists involved in the original incident, law enforcement and military personnel involved in trying to hunt him down, and reputedly a few Canadian hunters. Bruce carries the guilt of this around with him, particular considering the fact that it was his own intellectual hubris that prompted him to make himself the subject of the gamma experiments to begin with, resulting in the deaths of his colleagues and other innocent people caught in the crossfire. the fact that his research was used to create Blonsky, the Abomination, also haunts him.

As much as he tries to distance himself from the world, Bruce is an intensely ethical, very caring person at heart. He does not hesitate to involve himself in the troubles of others. In the first movie, he is seen stepping in to help a female coworker in the warehouse where he works being harassed by a group of men with seemingly ill intentions, despite the fact that this put him at risk of hulking out.

In the Avengers, he returns to New York to fight off the invading fleet of aliens, despite having the perfect opportunity to slip off into the underbrush and lose his SHIELD and military followers. He would rather do what is right than what is easy, and cannot always keep himself involved, even when the risk of a Hulk out is high.

It’s probably because of this pacifistic streak that being who he is hits Bruce so hard. He openly discusses past suicide attempts as a result of his condition.

Though he seems in recent years to be much more at peace with the Hulk than he had in early days, he’s still filled with a very unhealthy dose of self-loathing and horror at the monster contained within himself. Joss Whedon, the director of the Avengers, said that the popular misconception about the Hulk was that he was a superhero when in fact he was a werewolf, which is perfectly true to how Bruce sees himself and his control over the beast hidden inside. The irony is that the harder he fights the monster, the more he works to suppress and ignore and muffle it, the more bottled up and potent the rage becomes. Hulk is his most effective when he is unleashed freely by Banner to save New York, or trying to rescue Betty. The doctor teeters on the edge between trying to work with and control the monster, and battling his natural revulsion of the situation which makes him want to squash it all back down.

One of my favourite things about the character is the evolution of how you see him coping with the Hulk, and by extension, with his emotions. Early on we know he was violently repressive, prone to wild rage outbursts, unable to handle the situation and attempting suicide. Snapshot forward to him in the first movie, we see a Bruce Banner frantically minding his own pulse, playing with martial arts breathing and trying to control the physiological response to anger as a means of controlling the emotion itself. Harlem is a definitive moment for Bruce. Another military-created gamma monster, the Abomination, is on a tear, and Bruce actively becomes Hulk in order to stop him from killing innocent people. The fight is devastating, but Bruce triumphs and flees, with a better handle on his condition and a new willingness to engage with Hulk rather than just to trying to cure him away. By the end of that movie, his tactic has changed; he is engaged in meditation, he allows his eyes to go deliberately green, he has understood that the Hulk is a part of himself and that the quest for a cure to anger has brought him nothing but mayhem and misery. He gets enough control of himself to manage the passage to India, where we meet him again, working as a doctor and in touch enough with his anger to play with it, to mime it in order to actually taunt Black Widow.

Then, by the last fullcast Avengers film, Bruce is simultaneously more at ease and then eventually terribly re-traumatized by the incident with Scarlett Witch. He had been used to working on a team, had been getting 'complacent,' as he'd probably put it- and then with the help of a little bit of mind-control he was on a rampage in a civilian environment. In the last act of the movie he's trying hard to back away from hulking out, and only does so when Black Widow pushes him off a ledge- but this pushes him back into hard isolationism. He flees her, and their developing feelings for one another, to run and return to his hermitage.

In the rare moments when he is at ease, Bruce has a wry sense of humour that comes surprisingly freely. He serves as a superb foil for the quips and jokes of the humourous, buoyant Tony Stark, and is bright and quick to contribute tactical input and scientific suggestions when he’s called on. He’s a genius, and while he’s reserved and tries to step out of conflict, he isn’t actually shy or nervous at all.

Bruce is one of the great scientific minds of his generation. Before the gamma research went wrong, it had astonishing potential, and his work revolutionized the field. When he’s out of survival mode he is curious and methodical, tinkering easily with machines and making helpful repairs, as well as creating his own lab equipment and keeping a computer operational on the fly. He loves and gets genuinely excited (but not too excited) about his research, though most of his efforts the last few years were driven towards discovering a cure to the gamma poisoning. He's a tremendous pacifist, and helps Tony with the Ultron program despite some better judgement, out of a genuine desire to help make the world a better place.

Over the course of the Avengers, Bruce is superficially able to connect to acquaintances on an intellectual level, and is friendly enough with Tony that the other man trusts implicitly that Bruce will show up for the final battle, which he does. He has enough control of himself to somewhat function as part of a team, and at the end of the movie is seen smiling and leaving with Tony, and then in the sequel we see him working as Tony's terrible labmate, accidentally nearly destroying the world. He has the beginning (and end of) a tentative initial relationship with Natasha Romanoff, though things are obviously complicated between them, as he runs off into the sunset at the end.

All this was true when Bruce first arrived to Hadriel, and the big change between now and then is the shift in the balance between him and Hulk. Years living with the big guy in charge has left Bruce unmoored and twitchy, scattered and shaken. He's still himself, but will arrive a lot more unwell and scattered than he was when he left.

Hulk is more than ever a full person, capable of living, having motives, sustaining friendships. Although coping with that amount of time behind the Hulk persona is going to be big- and he'll have a lot of violence to face up to- I think that it's meaningful that he ends that film again by transforming once more, even though he's scared it'll kill him and that he'll never come back. I interpret the jittery and disconnected mannerisms in Thor 3 as a symptom of all that Hulk time. I think the next steps in Bruce's development will be reconciling everything that's just happened, recovering from the sheer mental strain of it, then working to find a way to reconcile and process all that time.

Inventory: Glasses
Abilities: Bruce is the Hulk. Human by day, huge wrecking ball by rage-event. He is power capped mostly by his unwillingness to cause collatoral damage.
Flaws: The chaos in Bruce is obviously the hulk. As per Joss Whedon's take, he's not a superhero so much as he is a werewolf, and lately he's been losing the battle with that evil. The violent monster took over and the scientist was eroded.

SAMPLES
Action Log Sample:
It’s uncomfortable, coming back. At first he doesn’t even realize it’s the same place- the streets feel different, the quality of life- but he recognizes the faces moving around him in the streets. He hears the same words spoken over the network that he did before he left. Fuck, he can even find his old account, see the stream of his life here before it was cut short. He’s back in the Hadriel community, if not exactly the city itself.

He doesn’t reach out. This is mostly because his mind is still choppy. Someone crashes into him in the road and he’s overtaken by a startling memory of impact, of going face down into the dirt of the arena. He jolts, and runs past the stranger, ignoring their apologies. He doesn’t look for the clinic, veers hard away from the space where it approximately should be in relation to the gate. Instead, Bruce scrambles through the town looking for a different landmark.

Tranquility never really understood what he was trying to talk to him about, Bruce doesn’t think, but he doesn’t need to be understood, he just needs the temple. He rushes through the door and feels the sensation of calm rush over him. He can use this.

Hours later, Bruce is still sitting in one of the temple corners, taking stunned stock of himself. Tony’s ridiculous clothes are here intact, but for some reason his glasses are cracked- maybe in the scramble down the roadside? For whatever reason, this seems like the one totally insurmountable problem he’s facing; not facing another abduction to an alien world, not the time in the fighting pit, the fact that Hulk has apparently been all that he is for- how long? All that is par for the course, he can cope with all that.

But if this place hasn’t gotten it’s act together and found an optometrist in the time since he’s been gone, there is a very good chance he’s going to get angry.
